Eleanor’s eyes opened. Darkness surrounded her. Years had passed since that day. The last day she’d seen her best friend. How had she forgotten it? Forgotten him?

“Tomani,” she breathed. She reflexively reached for the pendant, but it wasn’t there. Not long after that incident, her mother had discovered the necklace and had taken it away from her.

“You don’t need this,” her mother had said and pocketed it.

She’d been a child, not even six at the time. A few months later, she’d started kindergarten and forgotten about him over time, but she’d never been the same. To this day, she struggled to make friends.

A tear trickled down her cheek, followed by another and another. Her heart contracted with pain, but she took a deep breath and embraced it. She’d run from the pain all of her life. Running hadn’t worked.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered. “I didn’t know. Oh, Tomani, I miss you.”

She sniffled and swiped at the tears. No. She’d denied her feelings for too long. Something had to change. She wrapped her arms around herself and allowed herself to feel again. Anger and sadness mingled, and she let them take over. Her body shook with sobs. She cried for the little girl who’d lost her friend, for the adult who’d kept everyone at bay and hid, and, for the first time, she grieved the loss of her friend and for the child who’d never been the same.

The tears slowed and subsided. Her eyelids drooped, and sleep claimed her.
