Chapter Fourteen

NONE OF US spoke as we walked down Lowre Few Lane. Each of us had our head down, and we braced ourselves against the snow whipping into us.

My feet sank into a layer of snow that now covered the old cobble street and sidewalk. Ice pelted and stung my face. I cinched the front of my coat with both hands, trying to make it warmer.

Dylan still looked distant after seeing David. He was the only one of us four who didn’t appear to be cold. He wore a jacket. I had earlier offered him a couple of heavy wool jackets that had been my father’s when he was a boy, and I’d said he wouldn’t mind if he knew it was helping a kid keep warm. Dylan had shaken his head and taken the jacket I wore in between the melting frost and spring. I thought he’d placed a stocking cap and gloves in his bag, but he now wore none. His hair was covered with white flakes.

He glanced toward me and forced a smile. “Not exactly how I saw this night going.”

I nodded. “Aren’t you cold?” I pointed down at his hands. “I have some extra mittens. You want them? You might get frostbite.”

He looked down at his hands, made fists, and turned to me. He offered me a cockeyed grin, the lovely dimples forming on one side. “They’re actually warm. I don’t even notice it. See?” He placed the palm of his hand on my cheek. Heat radiated from his skin, and then pulled his hand back. “It’s like that every winter. Weird, huh?”

I never wanted to wash my cheek again. I merely nodded.

“Dylan,” Jade said, “you want to check your aunt’s house again? See if she came back?”

Dylan wiped the wetness from his face and pushed his bangs back. “Um, I guess so. Let’s try that first.”

We needed to climb this hill, go down the next, pass Ronan’s house, go back up the incline, and there’d be Dylan’s home.

We came near the top of the hill. The street was slicker, and I suggested we walk in the weedy yards. I stepped toward the side, where there were several trees, and the frozen grass crunched under my feet. I stepped close to a small shack and had a perfect view to the bottom of the hill. Visibility was not great, but there was Ronan’s house. The snow was falling even heavier in this area. In fact, it was even colder here than it had been a hundred feet back. Everyone came up behind me and stared down.

I wiped my runny nose. “You think it’ll be hard to get into Ronan’s world if we have to go?”

“Brian said he and his brother got inside. It didn’t sound hard,” Dylan answered.

Jade brought out her phone. “I’m going to call Erin again.” She stared at the screen, pushing buttons on the side. “It’s not even working now. Colton, let me see yours?”

I brought mine out. “Wait.” I tried to turn it on, but it didn’t start.
