CHAPTER SIX

IF PENELOPE HAD been a frightened child with a home she was scared to go back to, then Rainbow House was exactly the place she’d want to be. She knew she was doing the right thing here, but the vibes from the two males in the front seat of her little food truck told her they didn’t share her conviction.

Penelope was driving and Billy was sandwiched between the two adults to prevent any attempt to escape. A sideways glance as they neared their destination revealed remarkably similar expressions on their faces. It could have been a cute ‘father and son’ type of moment, except that the expressions were sullen. They were both being forced to do something that ran deeply against the grain. Being punished.

Her heart squeezed and sent out a pang of...what? Sympathy? There was something more than the expressions that was similar. Had Rafe been a kid who had broken every rule in the book to get some attention? He still broke rules—look at the total lack of appreciation for the stated boundaries at Loxbury Hall. Not that he needed to do anything to attract attention now. He was the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen. He was clever and passionate about his work. And he’d just risked his life to save a child.

The memory of the wave of emotion when she’d seen him emerge from the smoke unharmed made her grip the steering-wheel tightly. It gave her an odd prickly sensation behind her eyes, as though she was about to cry—which was disturbing because she had learned not to cry a long time ago.

‘Don’t cry, for heaven’s sake, Penelope. The only difference it makes is that your face gets ugly.’

There was no denying that Rafe Edwards stirred some very strong emotions in her and the fact that he clearly thought she was punishing Billy by taking him to Rainbow House was annoying. Hadn’t he been prepared to deliver Billy to the police? He’d soon see that she was right.

His expression certainly changed the moment Dave opened the door and welcomed them in. They must have just finished dinner judging by the rich smell of food. Most of the children were in the playroom, watching television, and the sound of laughter could be heard. Maggie was on the floor in front of the fire, dressing a small baby in a sleep suit. She scooped up the infant and got to her feet in a hurry.

‘Oh, my goodness. What’s happened? Billy? Oh...’ She handed the baby to Dave and enveloped Billy in a hug that was not returned. The boy stood as still as a lamppost.

‘This is Rafe Edwards,’ Penelope told her. ‘He’s the pyrotechnician I told you about—the one who did the fireworks at the wedding?’

‘Oh...’ Maggie held out her hand. ‘Welcome to Rainbow House, Rafe,’ she said. ‘I’m Maggie. This is Dave. And this is Bianca.’ She dropped a kiss on the baby’s head. Then it was Penelope’s turn to be hugged. ‘Good grief, darling.
