Death Can Come at Any Time
Most religions, however they imagined life after death, agreed that the decisions that a person makes before death impact the quality of the afterlife. The Jesus of Thomas shares this opinion, for he says, âLook to the living one while you are living, lest you die and then seek to see him, and find that you cannotâ (59).
There is an urgency about this warning: time is running out! If we are to find an answer to death, we must find it before we die, and as time is marching on mercilessly, we have a narrowing window of time in which to act. Jesus illustrates this dramatically in the following story:
There was a man of great wealth who possessed many riches. He said, âI will make use of my riches, so that I might sow and reap and plant and fill my storehouse with fruit, so that I will never lack for anything.â These were the thoughts he entertained about his riches, and yet that same night, he died. He who has ears should listen! (63)
