Chapter Nineteen

The Narrow Escape

Another day passed swiftly. The sky darkened and the time for the twins’ escape drew near.

Angelica paced the floor, garbed in a brown coat and dark pants. “Clara, grab all that food we’ve hidden and tie it all up into little sacks. That’s all we’ll take. We’ll travel light.”

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Clara asked, slipping on a dark cloak. “Remember that horrid creature that grabbed my shoulder when we were down by that forbidden area near the fence? It’s out there…somewhere.”

“We’re already up to our necks in trouble. We’ve got to get away from here!” Angelica said.

Clara packed some buttered bread and cheese into bundles. “I only wish we’d found a map of this country in the Master’s library. You know, so we’d know where we’re off to.”

Angelica tiptoed over to the door. She put her hand on the bronze knob and slowly twisted it. The door wouldn’t budge. “Well, I’ll be a kangaroo’s aunt!” she exclaimed. “They’ve been locking us up in here like…like jailbirds! We’ve got to find a way out of here.”

Clara frowned. “What about the window? It’s probably better this way. At least we won’t run into Sonswari or any other servants.”

“Come on!” Angelica called, her slim finger pointing toward the soot-filled fireplace. “Help me pull one of those stuffed chairs over.”

Huffing, they shoved one of the heavy armchairs over to the window. An unnerving creak filled the tiny chamber as Angelica pushed the partially cracked window up. Then, one after the other, the girls climbed up onto the chair, dropped their sacks to the ground outside, and squeezed, headfirst, through the open window into the dull black of night. Outside, three waning moons hung high in the dark sky. Except for the occasional chirping of crickets, all was quiet.

“That wasn’t so bad,” Clara said, stooping to pick her small sack up off the ground. “We’re lucky this house is only one floor. We didn’t have to fall so far.”

“Keep quiet,” Angelica said, raising her index finger to her lips. “Follow me. There probably won’t be much time before they discover we’re missing.”

The girls paused to glance back at the soft, eerie light leaking from the windows of the Master’s House of Truth. “So sad,” Clara said, “there’s not a single person saying goodbye.”

Angelica touched Clara’s arm. The two turned away from the sinister house. They set out, plodding through the garden and then along the steep trail down the hill. A comfortable distance from the house, Clara snapped on a small crystalline light that Urtleby had given to them as a gift. The bright light proved handy. They had not taken this path in months; they now noticed that many trees had fallen, and the foliage was much thicker than before.

“Yuck!” Angelica cried. “There’s poison ivy growing all over this trail…it’s spreading everywhere, even up the hill. It’s like those long vines are trying to take over the whole place.”

“It seems the Master’s protection over this place is fading really fast,” Clara said, her stomach tightening.
