“Our people have been fighting the enemy for

over two years,” he said, as we cautiously

made our way through the streets. “Passively.

We’ve provided food and shelter, we’ve kept the

telephone lines open and intercepted messages

from the Aryan side. We’ve organized training

and cultural events. For over two years, my

friends have helped the Jews in the ghetto to

keep their spirits up. Now it’s time for active

resistance.”

I pushed my hands deep into my pockets.

“The only way to give our people hope is to fight

back. Do you know what they do to all those

people who leave here?” He stopped and looked

at me. I didn’t reply.

“They send them to camps so they can murder

them. They want to wipe us out. They put

hundreds of people at a time into gas chambers.

Death factories.”

It was as though the clouds moved in front of the

sun and the world turned dark and icy cold.

Gas chambers? Death factories?

“We can’t just stand by and watch.”

Mordechai walked on.
