CHAPTER ELEVEN
Light flooded the space, light and chaos and noise and shrapnel, as if she had set off a bomb. The dragons writhed, screamed, roared; limbs sprouted out of gaps and unravelled from the floor, revealing only more dragons below in a confused tangle.
But I could still see Yenu through the confusion, and charged after her as she ran towards the Burning King. Whether she had killed him or not, she knew something about how he had gotten in, and therefore how we might get out. As we scrambled up the sudden hills and valleys of the writhing worms, dropping to our hands and knees and cutting our palms on the edges of scales like broken tiles, as we neared the ball of heat he had become, it seemed he had been pierced clean through. The sword was glowing white, and he had collapsed onto the heap of chains, the thick branches of his limbs clawing weakly at the handle, recoiling as if the white was heat rather than magic.
The big orange dragon slowly raised its head, as if under some massive weight it was unused to carrying, and even more slowly began to open its mouth, the fat, pointed tongue lolling, covered in its iridescent and flammable venom. Yenu was slowing down though; at last I could see where she was going, and she wasnât going to make it.
I tried to speed up, but couldnât get enough air; every breath was shallow, constricted, like a hand were around my ribs, squeezing. She turned back desperately, seemingly about to say something, then yelped in genuine alarm, the noise carrying with supernatural clarity over the noise of the worms.
I began to turn, was stopped dead by something slamming into me from behind; I felt talons clutch and flailed backwards trying to break its grip, waiting at any moment for the noise of the dragonâs claws punching through my coat and then my shoulder, but heard instead a sound I had only heard a few times before: the ponderous, muffled flap of the Advisorâs wings.
In a few wingbeats we had caught up to the Burning King, and Yenu snatched at my sword as we passed, yanking her feet up to avoid a swiping claw, and then the Advisor banked hard through an invisible membrane, sending us in a trumpet-blare of heat and light onto solid ground, real ground, not a dragon.
I hit and skidded, crashed into Yenu and over her, then leapt to my feet and ran for the Advisor, slumped in a heap of feathers with his wings over his face. The pale brown earth, already dry and cracked, audibly rumbled and began to collapse a mere handful of paces away.
But he was my first concern. I thrust away his wings, slapped his cheeks, which were dry and hot, the skin minutely abrasive, like the skin of a shark. He was panting, eyes open but unseeing, breathing harder than Iâd ever seen him. Yenu followed me, something vague around her shoulders,
