The author survived being sent to both Auschwitz and Dachau, and was reunited with his wife and son after the war. The uprising was finally quelled by the Germans on 16 May. The SS commander in Warsaw, Jürgen Stroop, wrote in his report, ‘Only the continuous and tireless commitment of all forces made it possible to apprehend and/or destroy 56,065 Jews. To this confirmed number must be added the Jews who lost their lives in explosions, fires, etc., whose number could not be ascertained.’ Those captured in the Ghetto were sent to Treblinka and Majdenek to be gassed; in all, 2,284,000 Polish Jews were exterminated by the Nazis. Stroop was executed in Warsaw in 1951.
