The final whistle blew.
âNo!â cried everyone.
âWhat happened?â said Hasan, shaking his head in bewilderment.
âIâm sorry,â said a smug voice, âI must be going deaf. Didnât you say you would be laughing now? Itâs just ⦠I canât hear anything.â
âYou got lucky,â Khalid scowled at the Blaze captain. âBut I meant Iâll be laughing at the end of the group when we go to the semis and you go home.â
âKhalid, shut it man!â said Saleem. âYou need to spend less time using your mouth and more time using your brain.â
The Blaze captain chuckled and trotted off happily to celebrate his teamâs unlikely draw with his mates.
Saleem saw that Khalid looked a little hurt and he remembered Imam Muniebâs advice about criticism.
âWe all need to use our brains, Khalid,â he added. âEspecially me. I should have put on a sub who I could have told to stay in position. Thatâs what went wrong out there at the end. If youâre all defending, who are we going to pass the ball up to, to break free from the pressure?â
âIf I can say something,â said Imam Munieb to the boys as he gestured towards Saleem. âThis man is your leader. He gives you instructions; you trust that they are the right ones. What I have seen here is very much like the Battle of Uhud. On that day the Muslims were winning when some of them decided they knew better than the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. They ignored their instructions, left their positions and tried to score the greater victory ⦠they ended up losing.â
âBut we didnât lose,â said Khalid.
âDo you feel as if you won?â countered the Imam.
âTwo minutes gents,â came a voice. It was the Pitch Two referee. âYouâre on again next.â
âWhat?â protested Ibrahim. âGive me a chance to catch my breath! Donât we get a break?â
âYou wanna start as sub?â asked Saleem.
âEr, no, Iâll be fine,â Ibrahim quickly reassured him.
âOK then. So listen boys,âSaleem continued, âhold your positions this time. Trust your teammates to do their jobs. Itâs good to work hard for one another, but remember how we do that?â
âBy making space,â said Junayd.
âGot it, little bruv,â replied Saleem with a smile. âOn a football pitch thatâs the best support you can give.â
