Chapter 3: The Cup and the Monster Tamer
âI see,â Lorraine said, as she stuffed bites of food from the dishes on the table into her mouth. âSo Clopeâs had quite a colorful life up until now.â
After hearing Clope out to the end of his tale and accepting his request, I went grocery shopping on my way back to Lorraineâs. As it turned out, sheâd been busy studying the cup, and was still at it.
It was quite deep into the night nowâwell past an ordinary dinnertimeâbut when Iâd asked Lorraine if she was still hungry after she reached a stopping point and came out of her room, sheâd said yes, so Iâd whipped up something quick for us.
Lorraine was actually quite the voracious eater: rare were the times she had no appetite at all, and she would eat just about anything. It amazed me how much she could fit into her stomach, especially given how slender her hips were. Where did it all go?
As for me, Iâd never been that big of an eater, but these days it took more than a regular-sized meal to fill me up. I suspected that if I felt like it, I could eat as much food as I wanted. I could be satisfied with blood alone, but that was a pretty dull diet, so I put in the effort to enjoy regular meals too, when I could.
âWell, I donât mean this in a bad way, but itâs not every day that you get such a talented blacksmith settling down in a place like Maalt,â I said. âIâd be more surprised to hear he didnât have extenuating circumstances.â
âThatâs true,â Lorraine agreed. âItâd be one thing if heâd been born around here, but this isnât the sort of place a skilled blacksmith would choose to build a successful career. Though, perhaps Iâm not one to speak in that regard.â
Come to think of it, Lorraine had done something similar. She was a capable enough researcher that she could have obtained a decent amount of fame and status working in the city, yet sheâd chosen a middle-of-nowhere frontier town like Maalt.
Perhaps this place just had some strange allure to it that attracted eccentrics. If it did, then Laura Latuule would surely be at the center of itâher sheer peculiarity made the idea seem likely, in fact.
I wondered why her vampire household has chosen to base themselves here. Likely they wanted to avoid notice, since that would be a vampireâs first priority, but...why Maalt specifically?
Ah, well. Puzzling over it probably wouldnât get me anywhere.
âMaaltâs supposed to be the kind of town where country bumpkins like me come to make a name for themselves,â I mused aloud.
Lorraine gave me a look. âActually, I think you fall pretty comfortably into the âeccentricâ category...â
Well, canât argue with that.
âOh, rightâLorraine.â
âYes?â
âSince it seems like youâve reached a stopping point in your research, did you figure out anything about the cup?â
âOh, that. The short answer is...yes, and no.â
âMeaning?â
âIâll start with its basic functions. As I expected, itâs not just an ordinary cup.
