Chapter 2: Departure
âThis is goodbye, then. Thank you for everything.â
Augurey was standing in front of the wagon, speaking to Ferrici. Behind her was a group of the other villagers, including the innkeeper and the people whom Siren had manipulated. Their gazes were warm.
Since weâd finished collecting all of the materials necessary for our jobs, we were headed back to the capital, and theyâd come to see us off. I guess my fears that theyâd chase us out had been proven unfounded. Well, that couldâve been because some of them had spoken up for us to the other villagersâmaybe Ferriciâs parents or the innkeeper.
Currently present were me, Lorraine, Augurey, and Goblin. The old man and Siren were hiding in the wagon. It was especially important that the latter remained inside, because things would get pretty messy if she showed herself. We were the only ones who knew what she actually looked like, and we hadnât exactly made it public that she was the one behind the brainwashing incident, but this was a small village. Having an unfamiliar face would only get you poked and prodded for your identity. That wouldnât necessarily happen for Siren, since sheâd pretended to be a traveling performer and had been staying at a villagerâs home before the incident, but she would get questioned about why she was with us.
It went without saying that sheâd used her unique ability to trick that villager into letting her stay in their home. I very much didnât want to be there for the aftermath of that particular deception. Yep, it was definitely best for her to stay in the wagon.
As for the old man, I was fairly certain we didnât need to worry about him anymore. That said, we still kept him restrained. Moreover, explaining to everybody we met that we werenât abusing the elderly would get pretty tiring, so that was why he was in the wagon too.
âNo, thank you,â Ferrici said. âYou saved usâyou donât owe us anything.â
âReally, thatâs not...âAugurey began. âAh, I suppose it doesnât matter now. If you ever come to the capital, pay us a visit. Weâll do our best to help you out.â
âIâll make sure to do that,â Ferrici replied.
With that, we finished saying our goodbyes and left the village.
âââââ
Incidentally, the reason we were returning to the capital with Goblinâs group was because when weâd asked them where their chief was, theyâd told us âeverywhere, and nowhere.â
Weâd originally assumed that, after sending Goblin out as our messenger, heâd come back with a meeting location we could then head toward. However, the old man had said, âWe have a number of bases of operation, but the chief is most often at our one in the capital, since he needs to coordinate everywhere else. Heâs probably there right now. But even if he isnât, itâll be faster if we wait for him to come to us, instead of going to him.â So that was thatâwe would go to the capital and then send Goblin to their base there.
