CHAPTER FOURTEEN

JESSE

As I step into the seventh-floor servery, the smell of sizzling onions and seared ham and eggs greet me like a warm hug from home. Ms. Fitz bustles around in the kitchen in a chaotic dance, preparing for the imminent breakfast rush of students.

“Hard at work as always, I see,” I call out over the cacophony of clattering plates and sizzling pans.

The petite leprechaun appears from behind a mountain of sliced vegetables, her green eyes twinkling like emeralds. “Jesse, my dear! What brings ye by this fine day? Yer not workin’, are ye? Don’t ye have classes to get to?”

“I do, but first I need to talk to you. Feel free to put me to work while I’m here.”

She points to the pile of dishes that needs washing. “Since ye offered.”

“Of course.” I shuffle to the back, grab my apron off my hook, and run a tub of hot, soapy water. Before I get started, I gesture through the air, drawing a rune to enact a privacy spell.

The moment the golden magik takes hold and I’m sure only Ms. Fitz can hear me, I get started. “Last night, Maverick found out something… unsettling. He overheard Bruce Branston and Chad plotting against me.”

She turns with a massive knife in her hand, and her expression hardens. “Go on.”

“Apparently, they are planning a full moon ritual tomorrow night,” I explain, scrubbing a plate with more force than necessary. “It’s designed to negate my free will and make me theirs to control.”

“Is this back to their plan of havin’ Chad violate ye to carry a generation of Branston whelps?”

“Yeah. It seems Belmont is frustrated with his inability to control me and thinks me being the Branston brood mare is better than me causing him trouble.”

“Those power-hungry bastards,” Ms. Fitz mutters, exchanging the knife to grip the handle of a frying pan. “So, what’s the plan?”

I draw a deep breath and sigh. “I think I have to leave Exemplar Hall before the ritual. As much as I want to fight and take them down, I can’t risk staying if there’s even a slight chance they could succeed.”

“And what of Wyatt and the others?”

“I haven’t spoken to Wyatt yet—I just found out an hour ago when Maverick came over for River’s mentor session—but I’m assuming it will be both of us and likely Drake and my guys.”

Ms. Fitz transfers a couple of pounds of bacon into a warming bin and goes back to the stove. “Leavin’ Exemplar isn’t easy and all of ye goin’ is a dangerous move. It’ll expose the fact that Wyatt’s not Belmont’s puppet and that ye’ve been playin’ him.”

“I know, but I’m not sure what else to do. If Branston is making his move tomorrow and Belmont is planning for the servers to be up and running by the end of the month—”

“—Wait. What’s this now?”

“Sorry. Yeah, while I visited River in the infirmary, I was slammed by a wave of nausea and keeled over. Wyatt came in soon after and
