Chapter Nine

When he was suddenly alone in the galley, Nick realized he was all but naked. Great. He must have made quite an impression on the staff.

He found a T-shirt, then checked on Josie and Jakob. “Uncle Nick?” Josie was just rousing, rubbing her eyes and looking around the room curiously. “Where are we?”

“On board a yacht.”

“I know that. I was just wondering if we’d sailed anywhere yet.”

“Not yet, but if you hurry and get dressed, you can watch us cast off and sail through New York Harbor.”

“Then where are we going?”

“I don’t know. Put on a sweater, it’s cold outside. What do you want for breakfast?”

“Cornflakes,” she said, the same request she made every morning.

“How about you, sleepyhead?” he said to Jakob, who was just waking up. “What sounds good for breakfast?”

“Pancakes!”

“Pancakes it is.” The built-in griddle in the galley would be perfect for pancakes in bulk. Once he scraped Amelia’s burnt bacon off it, that is.

He was actually surprised that Amelia had even tried to fix breakfast. He was right about her ineptitude in the kitchen, but at least she’d made an attempt. He liked it that she didn’t expect to be waited on hand and foot. But then, he’d already known that about her.

Unfortunately, his surprise, combined with being jolted out of a deep sleep, had caused him to be less than gracious toward her. He’d been in an aroused state due to a night filled with heated dreams about Amelia, so the abrupt wake-up call had made him doubly cranky. Maybe a plateful of fluffy pancakes would redeem him and bring her around. No one could resist his pancakes.

Twenty minutes later, with the kids’ dubious help, Nick had two huge stacks of pancakes keeping warm in the oven. He even found some real maple syrup to put on them.

“Let’s see who’s hungry,” he said, intending to go abovedecks and track down Amelia and the crew. Then he took a look at the children’s footwear and realized slick-soled sandals would never do. “Better put on your tennis shoes first. Then we’ll see about finding you some life jackets.”

They ran back to their cabin to change shoes, and Nick went up on deck to see what was what. The boat was just pulling out of its berth, and the two crew members looked much too busy to think about breakfast. Jules, though, proclaimed himself to be ravenous.

That left Amelia.

“Have you seen my wife?” He startled himself by the use of that word, wife. He’d used it last night, to rankle Amelia, but he didn’t think of her as his wife and wasn’t likely to start.

Jules silently pointed toward the front of the boat. Nick made his way to the forward deck, where he found Amelia curled up in a deck chair wrapped up in an old jacket.

“Breakfast is ready.”

She looked up, startled. Nick was once again struck by how truly beautiful Amelia was, with or without her princess trappings.

“I’m not hungry,” she said.

“Are you embarrassed because you burned bacon?”
