“Are you absolutely sure? Because I totally understand if this is not your thing. It’s only two days, and I know you have a ton of work.” Kimo finished zipping the second of his ruby red hard-shell suitcases and turned to me with a wary look.

“Since when don’t I?” I replied, knowing full well that I’d be paying for the impromptu trip with long hours of grading and lesson planning Sunday night. “The real question is, when would I get another opportunity to see you host a show? Nuh-uh, I’m not missing this for anything.”

Kimo still looked skeptical but nodded, accepting my explanation at face value. Was I into drag? No. Except I was very much into whatever Kimo wore. Especially in red. Red heels, red lipstick, the highlighter on his cheeks. Damn it, that color did something to short circuit my brain.

Should I want to watch a bunch of fellas falling all over each other? Not really. But Kimo Malala was my friend, and I was immensely curious to see him in action. I imagined witnessing him in his grandeur would be a sight to behold.

I instantly regretted it when I snatched up the closest case, fully intending to carry the monstrosity to Kimo’s pickup. “Jesus, what did you pack in this thing?”

Kimo’s side-eye was anything but innocent. “Shoes, makeup, and—necessary things.”

Huh. I lifted again, more prepared than the first time, and loaded the case into the truck. Kimo followed with the second, placing it alongside my single black duffle. It was only two nights. Not even Melody had packed so much when we traveled and for much longer. It was going to be an exciting and interesting experience, to say the least.

A warm palm grasped my shoulder, and I was startled, realizing I’d zoned out looking at the suitcases. I popped the trunk closed, but Kimo kept his hand in place, causing me to turn to him.

“John? Thank you for deciding to come.”

The scent, a mix of soap, deodorant, and male, filled my nose, and I found myself curious about what all the individual smells were. There was something spicy and warm, like late autumn nights where the air turned cool, and cider and warm blankets reigned. I found myself leaning into the touch before catching myself.

“No problem, man. It’ll be fun to do something different for a change.” I rasped, then cleared my throat, and Kimo took that as his cue. His hand dropped away, and it took everything in me not to chase it.

When was the last time I was touched by anyone other than my children? Kimo. It was him when he playfully hugged me a couple weeks earlier. I loved that hug, wishing it would have lasted longer but accepting only as much as was acceptable. I was absolutely starved for more. Deep down, I was beginning to understand where I wanted that warmth to come from too. Before I could act on it and wrap my arms around my friend, Kimo spoke, breaking up my internal struggle.
