Petrich was an active defender from the get-go and wasted no time becoming an impact player. After the Chargers first seven games, only middle linebacker Chuck Allen had more tackles.

We always felt that when things weren’t going well on offense that we had get them the ball back as quickly as possible. Our whole purpose was to make the other team go three and out. I remember an interview that the Boston Patriots coach did and he said we were the hardest team to scout because we rushed the quarterback so hard and so fast that they couldn’t do anything to stop us. They would double Ladd all the time and that made the other offensive linemen’s jobs harder because they had nobody to back them up. Everyone on our front line was really strong; we just didn’t have any weak links. And if they tried to run away from Ernie they had to deal with “Mr. Muscles,” George Gross on the other side.
