SharePoint Server

Health Analyzer and Throttling.

M any organizations will spend a lot their budget for monitoring corporate applications. System Center Operations Manager (aka SCOM) provides infrastructure monitoring that is flexible and cost-effective. It helps you to ensure the predictable performance and availability of vital applications, and offers comprehensive monitoring for your datacenter and cloud, both private and public.

Implementing SCOM or any other 3rd party tool requires expertise, knowledge and new processes in the IT department. One of the biggest advantage of SharePoint Server is, that a similar – monitoring like mechanism - is already available, but needs to be configured for an optimal output. This mechanism is called « Health Score ». The Health Score determines the health of your Web Application - on the SharePoint server where it is located - on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is the healthiest state.

SharePoint Server calculates every 5 seconds (by default and modifiable) the health of your web application thanks to the numerous predefined parameters, such as the use of memory, simultaneous requests etc ...

The goal of the Health Score is not to replace or change your habits with your monitoring tools that you already have in place. This is one more control or method that you benefit from SharePoint Server on the status of your web application and indirectly from your server. The Health Score and SCOM combination or other 3rd party monitoring product can be very beneficial (but also expensive)inexpensive for your organization to achieve SLAs that you offer to your business.

How can you check the status of your Web Application or Server? Simple and in a few clicks: You simply navigate to any SharePoint site and check the result that is sent as a Response Header, called X-SharePointHealtScore.
