It will be pleasant to escape, at last, into fresh air. An old, very gentle, Church of England pious lady of the Lancashire working class appeared one day before her relatives in great embarrassment. She had, she said, used for years a phrase picked up from her father: ‘Them fornicating Methodists’. ‘And today,’ she added, ‘I’ve found out what means!’

By now she would have been encouraged to say: ‘The Methodists are entirely disadvantaged, not religiously literate nor sufficiently positively discriminatory, not a truly multi-cultural community even though accessible to senior citizens, not relevantly open to or in touch with the significant grass-roots or even the crucial coal faces; and not, actually, a viable community or culture at all.’

… decent means poor. I should die if I heard my family called decent.

Thomas Love Peacock Crotchet Castle, 1831
