She had, she said, used for years a phrase picked up from her father: ‘Them fornicating Methodists’. ‘And today,’ she added, ‘I’ve found out what means!’

By now she would have been encouraged to say: ‘The Methodists are entirely disadvantaged, not religiously literate nor sufficiently positively discriminatory, not a truly multi-cultural community even though accessible to senior citizens, not relevantly open to or in touch with the significant grass-roots or even the crucial coal faces; and not, actually, a viable community or culture at all.’
