Chapter Seven

By the time Doc Cameron came late that evening, the setting sun bathed the 58-acre Chincoteague Pony Farm in golden light. As the truck pulled into the driveway, pine trees cast their shadowed branches upon the ground. Silhouettes of trees and bushes swayed in checkered patterns on the lawn.

The colt watched the truck approach from his post at the stall door. He listened to the crunch of gravel and watched Cynthia trot to greet the man, followed by her dad. He whinnied when they turned to head his way. She heard him and took off running for the barn, leaving the men behind.

“Hey, squirt!” she blurted when she reached Little Arthur. She was breathless and smiling and the colt rumbled a soft greeting of his own.

“Go ahead and bring him out, Cynthia,” Dad called.

She reached around the corner to get the lead rope and stepped inside the stall to clip it to Little Arthur’s halter. Then she led him out.

Little Arthur lowered his head to grab at tufts of grass as they walked. Even though he hadn’t yet learned he could survive on it, the colt loved the tangy taste of each slender blade when he rolled it in his mouth and gnashed with his little teeth.
