CHAPTER 25

December 13

KERRI WOKE UP TO THE sound of her buzzing alarm and a throbbing headache. The champagne had gone straight to her head last night, but she had been ecstatically happy in a way that she hadn’t been in a long time.

The rest of the night was a little hazy. She wasn’t a 100 percent certain, but she thought that she and Jon had kissed. A kiss that turned into a big make-out session. She thought that she might have stripped off her clothes. Did something else happen? she wondered. She quickly sat up in Jon’s bed. The realization washed over her. She had convinced Jon to have sex. Not once or twice. But three times. Yes, it was all coming back to Kerri. The hot and wet night. It was amazing. Sex with Jon had always been good, but it seemed to have gotten better. Maybe Madison had taught him a few tricks.

The front door opened, and Jon practically skipped into the room with a cup of coffee and two Tylenol. He looked giddy. She recognized that “I got me some” look. She sighed again, and this time there was no solace. To make matters worse, she realized that she had no pants on.

“Rise and shine, pretty,” Jon said.

“I feel awful,” Kerri said.

“Tylenol will help.”

“No, I feel awful about what we did.”

“Sure didn’t seem that way last night.”

“Jon, I’m engaged. And not to you. Not really.”

“So we had some fun.”

Kerri groaned. “Ugh, we shouldn’t have done that.”

Jon looked away. He didn’t say anything. He sipped his coffee thoughtfully.

“What do you want to do?” he finally asked.

“I have to go back to New York this morning.” Kerri struggled to pull on her pants and bra. When she lifted her head, it felt like a sledgehammer was crashing on her skull.

“Wait, why?”

“I told you. My students are putting on their Christmas show. I’m technically the director.”

“So not to see Beau?”

“No. I mean yes. Of course, I have to see Beau. He’s my fiancé.” She sighed. “My real one. You saw me packing my suitcase yesterday.”

Jon did remember that Kerri was going back to New York. On a 10:30 a.m. flight. He was only hoping that she might have changed her mind, after last night. He looked a little sad. “I’m too busy to drive you to the airport. You’ll have to get an Uber. And it’s not going to be me.”

Kerri pulled on the only clean sweater that wasn’t in her suitcase, the ugly Christmas sweater her parents had brought. She looked ridiculous in the gingerbread top and moaned. It was going to be a long day.
