Chapter Eleven

Gin’s eyes sting. She rubs them as she tries to shake the feeling of going right back to sleep. She fights to stay awake. She’s cold and grasps the covers around her neck as she strains to open her sleepy eyes. The light from the hallway does little to comfort her.

She lies still for several minutes as vivid pictures play in her head from the night before. She pulls her hand to her face to look at it in the dimly lit room. Her hand is clean. The light flickers on.

Gin slings her feet over the side of the bed and sits up, rubbing her eyes and yawning. The room is clean. She rubs a sore spot on her shoulder. She could feel where they stabbed her with a needle. She hadn’t possibly dreamed that. Had they moved her to another craptacular room? Nothing seemed out of place. The same nasty stains that she has studied for hours in her boredom are in the same place they were before. The disgusting desk still sits in the corner with the box sitting on it.

If this is the same room, where is all the blood? There’s no way it could all have been cleaned? Is there? She did get drugged. She could have been out for days, for all she knows. She cringes at the thought of them being good at cleaning blood. That would mean they might do it often enough to be good at it.

Gin hears shuffling on the other side of the door. She pulls her feet up and hugs her knees as she faces the door, not sure what will be there.

Nurse Bettie clears her throat as she enters the room. “I see you got yourself up.” She pulls a squeaky cart behind her. A slender, darker man follows the Nurse into the room. “This is Ron Jon, he’ll be helping us out around here.” She looks into Gin’s eyes. “I trust you won’t cause him problems.”

Gin shakes her head no. She sits quietly as Bettie unlocks and retrieves a bottle from the cart. Gin looks Ron Jon over, unsure of his warm grin. He speaks up, “Hi Gin, I’ll be taking you to group today, if you’re feeling better.” His voice seems soft, yet outspoken.

Nurse Bettie holds a pill in front of Gin in a paper cup. “Take this.” She offers her another water cup. Gin takes the pill and swallows it with a swish. She does not have the energy to fight right now and she knows she’ll be sleeping again soon. They don’t let her stay awake long. “Open”, Bettie demands. Gin opens her mouth and resist sticking her tongue out at her. “Thank you Gin.”

With a loud slam and then a clump, the cart is once again locked tight. It startles Gin, even though she expects it. She rubs her groggy eyes again with the palm of her hand. She looks over the top of her hand again. She is completely clean of blood.
