CHAPTER 5

Savannah

I couldn't stop the whirling thoughts spinning in my head as the strong hands massaged my back and kept me upright, so my legs wouldn't give way beneath me. Pulling away, I paced the length of the room before I finally sat down in the bucket seat in the corner, trying to focus my mind.

What the hell just happened? I knew there could've been a chance that Lindsey would've shown her face, but I hoped with the basics I had fed my mother, she would've managed to talk to Mike about the situation. Prepared him for at least the fireworks that might have happened if she had shown up with Liam? But no, my mother threw me straight into the bull ring as if I was clad in bright red clothing. God, I was furious at her for putting me in such a predicament.

I remembered my meditation techniques before the spiral managed to drag me fully under. I had fought this battle before, and I wasn't letting Liam Baxter win again. I was taking a stand, concentrating on my breathing, for a count of five, until I slowed the rapid rhythm of my heart rate. I couldn't allow him the chance to dig yet. I wasn't ready, but I knew my mind was confused at what had happened.

"River, what was that?" I asked cautiously.

"I…I can't," he stuttered, pulling his knees into his chest tighter as I dropped from the chair to the floor.

"River, you can talk to me. I know I must have scared you, but I will open up eventually. I need to know," I whispered, edging closer toward him as he exhaled a huge breath, he was holding in.

His large fingers reached forward, grasping my petite ones, and pulled me closer to him. I knelt between his open knees, trying to sooth his nerves. The somersaults in my stomach churned away as River placed his forehead against mine and closed his eyes, and I waited for the words he was trying to place together.

"Savannah…I've always wanted you," River confessed, shakily, baring his beautiful, glazed eyes, and tears slid down his cheeks as he pulled back to see my reaction.

My heart thundered in my chest at his admittance. In my naivety, I had literally dismissed all the signs and friend-zoned him. I
