The United StatesâBahrain Free Trade Agreement
On May 9, 2003, the USTR outlined a strategy for the establishment of a USâMEFTA, to be developed within a decade. One step to this end was the negotiation of BITs as well as TIFAs with Middle Eastern countries. The United States and the Kingdom of Bahrain had already signed a BIT in 1999, in force since May 30, 2001, and a TIFA on June 18, 2002. FTA negotiations proceeded swiftly from January 26 to May 27, 2004. On September 14, 2004, the United StatesâBahrain Free Trade Agreement (US-Bahrain FTA) was signed. It came into effect on August 1, 2006.
