MAYA

Weeks passed. The veil of black that the town had been clad in passed relatively unnoticed because of the hard work the people did on a daily basis. They had stopped work just long enough to bury and give their respects to the dead, and then they were back to work. Every morning, they scoured houses, streets, and tunnels, and every evening, they’d return to their homes, hoping their contributions meant something, hoping the vicissitudes would come to an end. That this was not all in vain and that it would all pay off in the end.

For Maya, though, the deaths still lingered. The absence of a caring and motherly woman like Cecilia was too obvious in too many facets. She hated that the people weren’t talking about her anymore. She hated even more how they were all able to focus on work like nothing had happened in the first place.

Where was the listlessness so common for this town after the passing of someone? Where were the slumped heads and the low, flat tones of speaking?

Cecilia had done so much for the town and its people. She deserved to have a statue raised in her honor, and yet, the people were treating her like she was just another death.

Someone had already taken Cecilia’s position at the restaurant as the cook, but Maya hadn’t bothered to find out who it was. She no longer went there. Even when the clearing of the tunnels was over, she didn’t return to work at the restaurant, and Simone hadn’t asked her to. She ate all her meals at home.

She couldn’t go back there because she feared her mind hadn’t fully grasped that Cecilia was gone. It would be like returning to a derelict childhood home after decades of living elsewhere. Cecilia had always been at the restaurant, and if Maya didn’t see her there, then it would mean…

The nightmares started to return. Sometimes, the dead would visit her. Callum’s entrails would hang out of his scooped out belly. Michael would smile despite his head having been crushed to a deformity impossible to survive.

Most of the times it was her dad. Luckily, he wasn’t mutilated like the others.

Cecilia, however, didn’t show up in Maya’s dreams. Of all the people, Maya wished for her to show up so she could tell her how sorry she was for not being able to do something that night when Hector killed her. She would sometimes cry so hard in her dreams that she would wake up tear-stricken, and Shasta or Isolde would run by her side to comfort her.

She couldn’t go on like this. She had to do something to occupy herself, but she felt as though the walls were pressing in on her from all sides. She couldn’t go to the restaurant because that’s where Cecilia had been, and she couldn’t go to the infirmary because that’s where her dad had been.

Eventually, she forced herself to make a choice. She bit the bullet and returned to the infirmary.
