Chapter Nine

The aroma of fresh coffee tickled Ellie’s senses, waking her from what had to be the deepest, most restful sleep she’d had in years. Like the feline she was, she stretched and opened her eyes.

While she’d noticed the size of the room last night and had made out most of the furnishings, she hadn’t been able to appreciate its beauty. If she were still dreaming, this would be her perfect bedroom ... muted tones of brown with amber accents, polished oak furniture, hand-carved and crafted during times when people cared about their work, expensive but tasteful.

She glanced over at the recliner where he’d spent the rest of the night. Hopefully, he’d managed to get some sleep, but had he chosen to join her in this massive bed, unless he’d been holding her again, she wouldn’t even have known it. There had to be enough space for three or more.

Sitting up, she removed the quilt covering her and moved her leg. Like last night, there was no discomfort. She sat on the edge of the bed and then stood, dropping her bottoms.

Instead of the disgusting smell that had emanated from the gash, she identified the pleasant scent of marigolds, cone flowers, and honey. Curious to see it, she slowly unwound the bandage. The wound was healed, leaving behind a slight red scar that would fade in time.

After pulling up the scrubs once more, she went looking for the bathroom to deal with her morning needs. Removing the gauze from her shoulder and dropping it in the trash along with the one that had covered her thigh, she saw that not even a slight scar remained. A quick glance into the mirror verified that her hair was as wild as ever, but this time there was no elastic to come to the rescue. Finger combing it as best she could, she sighed. Getting it cut wouldn’t help. It would return to its current length within hours. She’d already tried that.

Drawn by the aroma of the fresh brew, she left the bathroom, noting the circular window trimmed in stained glass flowers at the end of the hall. Did the sun ever shine through it casting rainbows? As a cub, she’d always loved chasing the sunbeams that had made it through the jungle canopy. Stepping up to its clear center, she smiled. In the distance, the spire of the St. Louis Cathedral rose majestically into the sky. She couldn’t be more than a dozen blocks from her apartment.

The fragrance of coffee, now even stronger, called to her, and she headed down the stairs, admiring what she saw. Steve’s home, a man’s home, was absolute perfection. Was there a woman in his life? He’d mentioned Laura, his housekeeper and a terrific cook if the red beans and rice were anything to go by, but no one else. Like her, had he trod a solitary path to avoid heartache and complications? Could that change now?

Ellie followed the coffee trail into the small kitchen. Last night,
