“Carter’s a bitch for imports, use Jonson,” she said with a firm tone. “Carter’s greedy with his ports and loyalty means nothing to him.”

“He taxed us an extra ten percent on top of his ridiculous fees,” Hunter replied in an exacerbated tone. He took another swig of his fourth mimosa. If he didn’t stop soon I would be dragging his body home.

After the initial awkwardness Hunter had easily hit it off with Shae…or at least the front she uses for business. I had seen her turn this switch one too many times and could see right through her plan.

“Like I told you, Jonson,” she said with a smile. “I’ll send you his information.”

We were at a small iron table under a shaded tree. The rest of the party was far away from us, leaving us in complete privacy as we talked. Hunter had long ago put his hand on my upper thigh and the more he drank the higher it seemed to go. I didn’t know if Shae could see but from the look she was giving me, she had to have guessed.

“My dad said you did something with art?” Hunter asked. She gave him a wicked grin.

“I wouldn’t ask too much about that,” she warned.

“Oh, come on,” he egged on. Were his words slurring already? I watched as he rested his head on his palm, but it was unsteady.

“Hunter?” I asked hesitantly. “Are you okay?”

He gave me a look like I was crazy.

“I’m fine, babe,” he replied.

“You look a little drunk, Hunter,” Shae said, a smile still planted on her face. “Maybe we should go lie you down.”

“Nah I’m good,” he said and tried to get up but lost his balance. I shot up to stop him from falling.

Shae came over to the other side of him and put his arm over her shoulder. Her hand brushed my side and I recoiled.

“Why don’t you be a good girl and go tell his parents he’s going to take a nap in the living room,” she said.

“Hey, don’t talk to my girlfriend like that,” Hunter protested, the slur in his speech more defined now.

“Oh, is she not a good girl, then?” she asked Hunter. He responded with a pout. “Ahh a bad girl then. Yes, she does look like one of those.”

“Stop it,” I hissed. “Hunter I’ll go tell your mother.”

She waved me off and lugged him to the back door. I sighed and went to go find Mrs. Williams. When I did I saw that she was already also a lot gigglier than before.

“Mrs. Williams,” I called as I came to her side. Her smile dropped slightly when she saw me. “Hunter has drunk too much. He’s going to sleep if off in the house.”

She nodded and waved me off like she did one of her waitstaff. I didn’t have time to worry about that, not when my ex was holding my boyfriend hostage and possibly whispering all my secrets to him.

I hurried into the house not even looking at the interior.
