âMore quilting?â Lawrence asked, opening the guest room door to check on Eleanor. She had woken up from her nap and was sitting in a rocking chair, needle and thread running through her hands as she stitched together a blanket. Night had begun, with Mary Anne and Dr. Carter packing up in the foyer to head home.
âYes,â Eleanor responded, setting her things down. She had a maternal glow. Could I really leave her? Even if it meant having the life Iâve always wanted? âMrs. William has me working for my stay. She says sheâs been trying to finish a picnic blanket for this summer but keeps getting sidetracked. I figured Iâd help her since sheâs been so accommodating to us.â She grinned. She has the same smile as her mother. âBut to be honest, I donât mind it. Itâs relaxingâespecially after hearing about your parentsâ situation earlier today.â
Lawrence approached, nodding. He didnât want to think about his parents anymore; it was too difficult. âSince when did you learn to stitch so well?â
Eleanor put a hand on her hip exaggeratedly. âLarry, Iâve always been able to do it. My mother taught me growing up on the farm. Itâs one of the things I really pride myself in. Iâve worked at it for years.â I never knew that.
Lawrenceâs eyes went wide suddenly, his mind racing. âEleanor, just how familiar are you with different kinds of fabric?â
She pondered. âOh, only somewhat. I could tell the difference between materials, if thatâs what you mean. Iâm not an expert though. If you want information in that area, you should ask Mrs. Williams.â
âThe torn clothingâdo you think sheâd be able to recognize the type of fabric it is?â
âIâm not sure,â Eleanor said. âBut you might as well give it a try. She worked as a seamstress previously.â The two stood up and rushed down the hallway, bursting into the foyer. I could be on the verge of a breakthrough. Mary Anne and Dr. Carter were preparing to leave. Lawrence grabbed the fabric.
âWhatâs he up to?â The professor asked. âLawrence?â
âWhen heâs set on something, thereâs no reaching him,â Eleanor murmured. The three of them followed him through the front entryway.
âMrs. Williams!â Lawrence called, entering the kitchen. The small woman jumpedâshe had been setting out the silverware for dinner. âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to frighten you.â He held out the black clothing to her. She took the material into her hands. âIs there any chance that you might be able to identify what kind of fabric this is? Please, itâs very important. It has to do with solving the kidnappings. Itâs our only clue.â
âOh! Well then, Iâll do my best.â She groaned as she lowered into one of the dining chairs. The four of them watched her intensely. Mrs. Williamsâ wrinkled hand ran across the fabric. She turned it over and examined it from the other side. âThis is seriously quality materialâsome of the finest Iâve ever seen, even with the weather damage.â Mrs. Williams ran her fingers through the inside, surprised by its softness.
