“Sir?”
“Sorry, can you please repeat the last one?”
She did so with contempt
Colin thanked box-lady, and she offered the rehearsed ‘Thank you for calling, Goodbye’—and the phone clicked in his ear.
He poked his tongue out as he reset the receiver, then browsed through the phone records he had for the first two identified victims. Much to his disappointment, none of the dating agency numbers were on either of the girls’ records, but it was worth a try. At least he might confirm if any of them had registered with a dating agency.
The first one he called was far more hospitable than box-lady.
“Thank you for calling Two’s Company. Marissa speaking.” The young woman sounded cheerful.
“Good morning, ma’am. This is Detective Sergeant Anderson from Jadesville CIB. I have a few questions regarding your services if you have a minute?”
“Fire away, Detective.”
“Do you keep records of your clients?”
“Yes. We have a file for each potential match. It’s necessary for us to keep them informed of relationship opportunities.”
“That’s what I was hoping. Would it be possible for me to come over there today and borrow your files for a while to copy them?”
Apprehensive to divulge client information en masse—but unwilling to discuss the matter in front of a customer—she opted to comply.
“Yes, that’d be fine.” She smiled at the male client sitting opposite her—embarrassed by the interruption. He raised his eyebrows and continued to watch the stream of ants labouring along the floor-to-ceiling trail on the office wall.
“What time would suit you, Marissa?”
“If you come in around midday, I’ll be able to give you a few minutes. It’s a big filing cabinet.”
“That sounds good, thank you. I’ll see you at twelve.”
Colin called the other two agencies to make similar arrangements to borrow their files. The copying machine was in for a hiding—no doubt about it. There would be thousands of single folks in the city, and he’d need help to sift out potential suspects.

He’d spent the afternoon duplicating files collected from the Agencies. In total, there were twelve hundred and sixty-eight men registered. Their ages ranged from eighteen to sixty-seven. It would be a massive search. While he dreaded sifting through the Personal Data Sheets of every man listed with an agency, it was necessary. A Police Profiler had assisted Colin to sift out those considered non-suspect. After considering the nature of the crimes, the Profiler suggested Colin remove anyone over age sixty from the list. This was due to the intense physical work involved in the movement and burial of victims. Thus, four hundred and six people were dropped from the list of possible suspects. However, that still left a load of admissible POI’s.
“Eight-hundred and sixty-two.” Colin scratched his head and yawned.
By early evening, he’d been assigned two more uniformed officers, Soames and Cooper, to help with the sorting and rating of those filed. Senior Constable Soames looked over the massive stack of paperwork on Anderson’s desk. He looked at Colin with a confused expression.
“Don’t these agencies have a Website?”
“Why, Soames?”
“Because if they do, we can correlate them without the paper hassle.
