Eva’s heart was beating painfully fast.

Ridiculous!

Her body ached for his arms around her. She heard the noise in the hallway, waited for a door to close, and quietly walked out into the dimness, lit up by sconces.

Bonnie’s room was only several doors down. Eva walked closer and could hear the noises coming from behind the closed doors.

It was him.

She heard the little harlot call his name.

Heard his soft reply.

The rustling of the clothes.

The moans of the harlot.

His grunts.

Eva closed her eyes and listened to the sounds of their intimacy. Jealousy seeped into her heart as she stood like a thief, afraid to breathe. She wondered what he did, how he caressed the other woman, kissed her mouth, touched her body. Hers, not Eva’s. She wished she was there in his arms, feeling the weight of his body, the roughness of his skin under her fingers. She wanted those blue eyes to gaze at her, and the naked body under his strong hands—hers.

But she was here.

And he was behind the closed door.

And there was another woman in his bed.

She heard him grunt, could almost feel the tense pleasure in its sound, and then the panting, the release that another woman gave him while she stood alone in the darkness of the hallway.

She opened the eyes abruptly and hurried back to her room. There, as if the Belle House was suffocating her, she opened the window. It overlooked the main street, and she saw the many carriages that stood in the middle of the night, waiting for their masters, while the masters found themselves in the arms of the women who sold their services.
