Packing Up

“How many books do you own?” Elliott asked, picking up my borrowed copy of Annie in My Heart.

He furrowed his brow when he saw the cover. I could see the wheels turning in his head and I jammed by hand into them by grabbing the book from him before he could make a crack.

“That one doesn’t go in the box,” I said. “I’ll finish with my books anyway. You worry about your room full of dirty magazines and jockstraps.”

“They’re fine reading,” he said, holding up a Hot Rod magazine from his box of books. “Also, I burned the jockstraps.”

“Medical waste,” said my dad, walking past with a box in his arms. “Have either of you seen the packaging tape?”

“Kitchen counter,” said Elliott. “I think. Beth had it last.”

“You did,” I countered, finishing clearing my shelf into the box of books. All my old Choose Your Own Adventure novels, Babysitter’s Club, and a few light romance novels my mom had let me buy. They covered up my two big programming books, dog-eared from lots of flipping around as I programmed my interactive stories for my computer.

As I finished, I realized dad and Elliott were having another conversation at the front of the apartment. They both seemed relieved that I was in such a good mood. Dad even thought I was excited about moving to California. I’m not sure what he would have done if he knew the truth, but I had sworn to Ms. Rossi not to tell them.

I sighed and sat back on my bed, the book resting against my knees. Max glugged in his bowl on my desk next to the bed.

“Don’t worry, dude,” I said, lightly tapping my fingers against his bowl. “I won’t put you in a box. You might get to stay here. If you’re lucky.”

He glugged again, sending a tiny bubble out of his mouth rolling up to the top of his fishbowl.

“No, I can’t even tell you about it,” I said. “But she’s wonderful.”

I ran my fingers over the cover of the book she had lent me as if I were caressing the small of Ms. Rossi’s back. When I held the book up to my nose, I smelled paper and glue and cardboard and the faintest trace of jasmine and roses. She had read this book. Her fingers had touched each page. Her eyes had pored over every word.

I had read the book feverishly. The two teenage girls, Adeline and Laura, were adorable in their halting romance. Their discovery of their own sexuality. Unlike the two of them, I had no doubt about my real desires. I only had to stare at that poster of Wonder Woman for a few seconds for confirmation. But the relationship between Adeline and Laura and two teachers at Adeline’s private school was more exciting to me. It was never overtly erotic, but because it dealt with sexuality at its core, it was erotically charged. I also could not ignore the comparisons between the younger of the two teachers, Ms.
