Yesenia wasn’t in their apartments when Corin returned. His suspicion flashed immediately to Aiden, but Aiden had been with him.

Corin did this more frequently now, cataloguing every open question into a nefarious purpose. She was probably at the chalet and would be back shortly. She’d said she wanted to be here when he returned, but he’d taken longer than expected, so she’d left. In boredom. Defiance.

Corin searched for something to busy himself, but his dread didn’t leave him. Was it the way Aiden had lingered, catching him in questionably casual conversation after their father had left, like he was purposely stealing time? Corin had seen right through the light, cheery words, but his wounded heart, that’d always wished for a brother he could be friends with, overruled the warnings sounding in his head.

I have an idea, as I said. Wouldn’t it be nice for us to work together, for a change?

Aiden had rambled on about some half-cocked idea for a new festival, but then he’d brought the conversation to a jarring, abrupt end. The switch in his brother, as he turned from feigning fraternity to his disgust of it, was so abrupt that Corin thought there must have been something to signal it.

Corin’s worries returned. Yesenia was probably at the chalet, but what if she wasn’t?

There was only one way to know, and he’d have to risk Yesenia’s ire to confirm it.

He pulled his cloak from the rack and shrugged it on. The unsaid rule between them was that the chalet was hers unless she invited him. She’d been generous with these invites in the almost four months since, more than he’d expected, but in return, he respected the agreement. She’d left no note indicating where she’d gone, or that he should follow.

But he could handle her fury, if it meant confirming his dark suspicions were only that.
