Chapter Six

Keeping his arm around Horace, Donovan polished off the rest of his food. He’d already cut his steak into bite-sized chunks, so he only needed the one hand. That meant he could hold Horace, soothing himself and his animal that his human was safe in his arms.

“When Herbert dragged me from the bus station, there was a deputy standing right there,” Horace told them, a frown creasing his features. “He didn’t do anything. When a tourist pointed it out, the deputy laughed and said it was just the Broussard brothers having a family squabble and to not worry about it.”

“Damn,” Kontra muttered. “Corrupt cops in town, too.”

Horace nodded. “When we got home, the beating was bad. I ended up with a broken wrist,” he told them, his voice quiet as he pressed even closer to Donovan. “Lost my job at the diner while healing, and now I work at the grocery store.” Curling his lip, Horace grumbled, “No tips there.”

“Herbert will never get near you again,” Donovan declared, hating the disbelief he smelled in Horace’s scent. One way or another, he would make good on his vow. “I promise, my mate.” After setting his plate aside, Donovan cradled Horace’s jaw, urging his human to meet his gaze. “I will protect you.”

“This is where Herbert saw me last. He’ll come back here looking for me,” Horace whispered, worry furrowing his brow. “He’ll bring his friends, and if that doesn’t work, he’ll bring the sheriff, claiming you’re kidnapping me.”

“He doesn’t know where this place is,” Kontra claimed, shaking his head. “We removed that knowledge from him.”

Horace snapped his attention to Kontra. “Really? How?”

“Vail’s mate, Draven, is a warlock-vampire hybrid,” Kontra explained. “Vampires have the ability to alter the memories of most humans.”

“They do?” Horace squeaked, revealing that vampires must have been touched on by the guys downstairs. “Holy shit.”

Kontra chuckled, clearly amused by Donovan’s mate’s response. “Yep. It’s how vampires can hide in plain sight. Can’t have humans remembering that they’ve been sucked on, now can they?” With a reassuring grin, Kontra continued, “Anyway. Once Prudhoe saw what a self-entitled asshole Herbert was, we decided to remove his memory of being here. Herbert was returned to his boat, and we towed him out to a different area of the swamp. After giving him a bit of a knock on the head, when Herbert wakes, he’ll think he was out there poaching by himself.” With a smirk, Kontra added, “Herbert will think he got hit by a large gator, lost his balance, dropped his gun into the swamp, and knocked himself out for a while. When he goes home, he’ll be none the wiser about us out here.”

Horace nodded slowly, seeming to be processing that. “Okay. Um.” He glanced between them again. “If he was poaching alone, what does he think I was doing?”

With a grin, Kontra waggled his eyebrows. “You spent the night at your boyfriend’s house.”

In seconds, the blood drained from Horace’s face, leaving him deathly pale. He squeaked, breathing swiftly.
