Roaring in anger, Maui hoisted the sail then began to yank the spears out of their canoe, hurling them off into the water one by one to get rid of the lines attaching the Kakamora’s canoe to theirs. Good idea, Moana thought, jumping into action.

As she leaned down to tug a spear from the bow, she glimpsed movement from the Kakamora boat. Looking up, she saw it start to separate—splitting apart into three boats that were spreading out to surround them.

“Their boat is turning into more boats!” she cried.

But their problems didn’t stop there. Warriors were leaping up onto the ropes and using them to swing over to their canoe!

Frantic, Moana and Maui dislodged the spears as fast as they could. With two hands, Moana yanked the final one from the mast and flung it out over the waves.

“Yup, I just did that.” She smiled at Maui. They’d done it!

Bonk!

Two small reddish-pink feet hit her on the head, knocking her to the bottom of the boat. Rolling over with a groan, she saw that there’d been one more spear higher up on the mast with a rope connecting one of the Kakamora’s boats to theirs. Now a row of Kakamora was sliding down the rope and dropping down on them, shouting triumphantly. Maui was knocking them off with the oar, but more kept coming.

As Moana jumped to her feet, the heart of Te Fiti hit the wooden planks of the boat with a thunk. It must have been knocked loose from her necklace when she fell.

Bouncing merrily, the stone began to roll away, and Moana scrambled after it. The Kakamora warriors spotted it, too, and the chase was on. Moana felt a surge of hope as a wave pushed the boat to the side and the stone slid toward Heihei. Maybe he could stop it. The rooster’s head bobbed forward and he plucked the stone from the boards…then swallowed it down.

“Heihei!” Moana cried as a Kakamora warrior swooped the rooster up.

The creature drummed a little beat on himself in delight and sprang up onto the mast. Yelping in dismay, Moana lunged upward, but the Kakamora had reached the rope and quickly cut the end from the spear, swinging back toward the main canoe with Heihei in his arms.

Moana could feel herself starting to panic. They had to get it back! Her eyes swung to Maui pleadingly. He had to stop them! “Maui! They took the heart!”

The demigod glanced over, his eyebrows raised. “That is a chicken,” he said.

“The heart’s in the—we have to get him back!” Moana cried.

Sizing up the fleeing Kakamora and the two other canoes bearing down on them, Maui leapt to the outrigger, pulling the sail taut. Moana clutched the canoe as they leaned precariously to the side.

“Chee-hoo!” Maui shouted. Then, with a sharp tug, he used his weight to pitch-pole the boat end over end, landing with a huge splash and pointing back toward the main Kakamora boat.

Whoa. Moana gazed at Maui in amazement. She had to admit that was pretty cool.
