Lift Off
The date was Marked on the calendar: July 16, 1969. On this day, three pioneers would embark on a historic journey to the Moon. They wouldnât shoot directly to the Moon, though. The crew would orbit for three days. If the conditions were right, the lunar landing would take place on the afternoon of July 20.
In the weeks leading up to the launch, everything was checked and double-checked. Apollo 11 was ready to launch. The astronauts were trained and eager to begin their journey, and the flight crew knew their roles.
President Kennedyâs goal was within reach. It seemed a simple goal â according NASAâs 250+ page press-kit, Apollo 11âs objective was to: âPerform a manned lunar landing and return.â 43
