Back in Bob’s apartment, I sat by the phone, Lucy’s number in hand. I also had a piece of paper and a pen at the ready.

Maybe I can get his name, his shop’s address... Then the rest is easy!

I crossed my fingers for a second, then started dialing.

“¿Hola?” a female voice answered.

“Hi, is this Lucy?”

“Speaking.”

“Hi, I’m Charlie. I was at your friend’s surf shop about thirty minutes ago, and he gave me your number.”

“Argh! Yeah, I remember.” She let out a loud breath. “You’re the one looking for Fuckface?” The increased volume of her voice made me pull the receiver away from my ear.

“Is this his legal name?” I asked, hoping my humor would calm her down.

“Argh. I just wish I could—”

“Listen, he’s not a friend of mine or anything. I’m just trying to track down one of the women who took a surf lesson from him.”

A cacophony of snorts and laughter echoed at the other end of the line. When the odd noises finally stopped, she continued. “Man. Let me guess: Fuckface had sex with her? The asshole left town. No forwarding address. He fucking burned down the shop that hired him in the first place.”

“Whoa! Hmm...” I dropped my pen and stayed quiet.

“Sorry, man. I’m just upset. Not at you. And this freaking heat... I just wish I had a pool I could dive in.”

I paused, weighing the odds: although she was an emotional train wreck, she knew my guy and could help me track him down. I had a pool. Win-win, right?

“I have access to a pool... Would you like to come over?” I asked.

“You shitting me?” Her voice had now reached teenage-girl excitement levels.

“No, I’m serious.”

I gave her the address; we agreed to meet at the gate in an hour, then I hung up.

Maybe I’ll get at least one useful bit of information from her once the cool water calms her nerves.
