My spirit guides lead me toward what I think is the living room, judging by its size and the vaulted ceilings. Gary follows, filming me as we go. If there’s furniture here, it’s buried below piles of clothes and fast-food wrappers. I pick up an empty Pepsi can and throw it across the room. The pile growls.

“What are you sensing?” Gary asks.

“A chaos demon, or demons. Considering the living conditions, it’s not surprising. The Daemons of Chaos thrive on the deep and dark emotions of mortal creatures.” The family dynamics are a huge draw for this type of creature. “My spirit guide tells me these demons have resided with this family for a hundred years.”

“That long?” Gary asks.

“Yes. This family has been afflicted for multiple generations. They will never be whole until the chief demon is gone. Even then, it’s a gamble.”

“Why?”

“If they fall back into their destructive ways—hoarding, alcoholism, sexual abuse—this demon will be back and will bring its friends. We must get rid of this trash to get rid of the demon, and that won’t be easy.”

“Why is that?”

“It has plenty of places to hide among the piles. Also, it thrives on the hoard. As we dig through the layers, it will be angry. It’s going to fight us every step of the way.”
