Wednesday, January 13, 1971

9:22 p.m.

"I'm really sorry we're bothering you two." That was me as soon as Greg opened the door.

He was wearing a red sweatshirt and a pair of green drawstring cotton pants along with a pair of sneakers. "It's no problem." He hugged me and then moved to Carter. "How was the party?"

"It was odd," said Carter.

"Very," I added.

We followed him into the kitchen where Mike was sitting at the table with a pile of papers and a glass of something dark on the rocks, probably bourbon. He was wearing a tight black t-shirt. "Have a seat."

Carter and I both pulled out chairs and did just that.

"Either of you want anything?" asked Greg. "Beer? Something stronger?"

"I'm fine," I said. Then I changed my mind. "If you have a Coke, that would really hit the spot."

"Coke and champagne?" asked Carter with a grin.

I shrugged. "Yeah."

"One Coke coming up. Carter?"

"Do you have any milk?"

"Sure," said Greg as he walked over to the fridge.

"Milk and champagne?" I asked.

He patted his belly. "Settles the stomach."

"You two look sharp," said Mike with a grin. "Are sweaters the new black tie? I thought you two were going to a fancy thing at the Roberts-Harris House."

"Jeans and sweaters was the theme," I said.

Mike sat back and crossed his arms. "I have a lecture I wanna give you, Nick."

Carter laughed as Greg said, "Better him than me."

Mike glanced over at his husband who was pouring out a glass of milk. "I'll save my lecture for you later."

"Mm, hmm," said Greg as he walked over and handed Carter the glass.

"Thanks," said my husband.

"Does this lecture have to do with my hobnobbing with the social set?" I asked.

"It does," replied Mike. "Lemme ask you a question I've been dying to ask you since last October when all this nonsense started."

"Go ahead." I then said, "Thanks," to Greg who was handing me a bottle of Coke.

"Has J. Paul Getty been at any of these things that you two have attended?"

"Of course, not," I replied. "No one wants him to steal their paper clips or random piece of silverware."

Everyone else laughed at that as I had a swig of my Coke.

"Well, then, I'm prepared to amend my previous comment about you being the 'pet fag' of the social set."

"Mike," growled Carter in a warning tone.

He held up his hands in a gesture of surrender. "I'm not only amending that term, I'm also withdrawing it."

"Have you been hanging out with lawyers or something?" I asked. "That's fancy talk for a cop."

Mike rolled his eyes at me. "The point is that I think you're really the 'pet billionaire' of the social set."

Carter looked at me and then nodded. "I think you're right. I never realized until this Kyle Markham asshole showed up how much people are talking to us about money."

"Agreed," I said. I reached over and clinked my Coke bottle on the side of his glass of milk.

He winked at me and then turned to Mike.
