Chapter 26 - Interview

Vulfort had always enjoyed the interview rooms, with their rough-hewn walls and the rings built into the floor and ceiling left over from a darker time. As long as there had been a free Kaharas there had been a Sorcerous Crimes Division, though in times past the city had wielded them like a secret police, plying the dirty deeds of those in power and playing out false-fronted witch hunts.

Though that time was long past, the secretive nature of the Blackbows and the fears lurking in the minds of the common criminals made those iron rings an effective persuasion tool, even though he’d never mentioned them to a single suspect. His fiancée was certainly eyeing them with more than a little apprehension as he opened the steel door and slipped inside with his Sergeant Detector.

Her eyes lit on him. “Oh, thank the Mothers! Alcott, there’s been a terrible mistake. I told them they had no right to hold me, but they won’t listen.”

Vulfort pulled out the small wooden chair opposite his fiancée and sat, removing his gloves to feel the familiar grooves and knots of the table beneath his fingers. He could feel the familiar sorcery of her cousin steeped around her. Sergeant Boshea had a small tray of summer fruits and bread, scrounged from breakfast, a bottle of wine from Vulfort’s old quarters, and several clay cups.

“You should eat, My Lady,” his Sergeant Detector said as he placed the fare between them. The wine wasn’t an expensive one, but it better befit her status than the kitchen’s housebrew ale that Vulfort would, admittedly, rather be drinking.

“It would seem,” said Vulfort as the wine was poured, “that your cousin has involved himself in some unfortunate happenings.”

Avarine shifted in her seat. “I thought you came to get me out of here. You’re the Security Councilor now, aren’t you?”

“Of course, of course. But we have a few things to discuss first. You have little to fear. Are you an unregistered adept?”

Avarine looked at the wine with distaste. For some, the interview room brought with it hunger, and appeased hunger loosened tongues. For most, it caused too many nerves for hunger to take root. Vulfort’s fiancée appeared to be the second one, and she pushed the cup away. “No,” she said.

“But your cousin is.”

Her eyes went to the tray. “Yes.”

“Splendid!” said Vulfort. At her shocked stare he continued, “Now that we’ve established what we both already know, we can uncover what we do not. How long has he been working with the rebel kala’del in the city?”

She levied a chilly gaze, her hands folded gracefully in her lap. “I know of no such conspiracy,”

Doubtful. None were so well-connected with the city’s non-human residents as the Titanum family. Her ear would be to the ground for any and all rumors among the elves, dwarves, and grenndraki. “And nothing of a missing migratory shaman, I am sure. Wise to distance yourself from the whole affair; your involvement could spell the end of the Titanum family.
