Nothing is ever reported: This was the case with Dr. Dan. Many different parents over the years were concerned about his conduct, his frequent desire to conduct impromptu invasive physical examinations, his regular use of rectal thermometers, and other problematical incidents. Each of the parents responded by removing their son from the activities or changing doctors, but no formal allegations or charges were ever made. Nothing appeared on society's radar.

The information is reported, but ignored, discounted, discredited, and therefore discarded: Over the years many parents complained about Coach Carl's behavior. He was seen “pantsing” children, patting them on the buttocks, and generally violating their personal space in ways that made both children and parents uncomfortable. When parents complained to the soccer league they were told that Coach Carl was an old-fashioned coach and “it doesn't mean anything. That's just his coaching style.” The league became so used to these complaints that before new families ever met Coach Carl they were told not to worry. Nothing was ever said about the fact that two sexual misconduct allegations had been made to police in previous years. Since neither allegation led to an arrest or conviction, that information too vanished into thin air.

The information is actively suppressed by an organization to protect the organization's reputation and the good name of the alleged offender, and the police are never notified: This consistently occurred in the many cases of complaints about pedophile priests reported in the press (The Investigative Staff of The Boston Globe, 2002). This has also been seen in the mismanagement of similar cases by schools (van Dam, 2001). Typically, when enough parents begin to worry about a particular person's behavior they tend to voice their concerns to the organization employing the alleged offender, namely the school, the church, or the sports league, rather than dealing directly with the police. Staff at the church where Marvelous Marvin was volunteering did exactly that. They took their concerns to the church.
