The Serpent Strikes

It was a few seconds before Gafferty was brave enough to open her eyes again. She clung to Will for dear life, her heart in her mouth as she watched the street pass by far below them. She could just see Crumpeck ahead of them, trying to keep his glider flying steadily while hanging on to the awkwardly shaped piece of glass.

‘We should be able to catch up with him at this rate,’ said Will, over the rushing breeze. ‘Do you have a plan for when we do?’

‘Nope. Rule Four all the way: if in doubt, make it up.’

He glanced at her, shame-faced. ‘Look, I’m sorry I said I didn’t believe you when you said he was up to no good. The truth is, I did believe you, but I still wanted to believe there was some good in Crumpeck too.’

‘You want to see the good in everyone,’ Gafferty said, smiling despite her nerves. ‘There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s one of the reasons you’re my friend. And I … wait, what’s that?’

A sleek black shape arched upwards from the ground and came speeding towards them. Gafferty had never seen anything like it. A black serpent soaring through the air, its hollow eyes staring at them, its body made of writhing shadows. Its jaws opened wide as it bore down on them – the thing was going to swallow them whole if they didn’t move out of its way. Will tried to swerve but the serpent was travelling too fast.

Gafferty screamed as the creature’s mouth engulfed them. They fell into a black tunnel of deathly cold air as if flying through a nightmare made real, the glider spinning around like a leaf in the autumn wind. Suddenly they emerged from the serpent into the sunshine again, but the glider kept spinning, completely out of control and heading straight for the hard concrete road beneath them. It seemed like they had made a habit of tumbling to the earth together, but this time they were going far too fast – there was no way they could ever survive this crash!
