Phonomicrosurgery to improve voice quality does not need to be a frightening experience. There are a number of vocalists who are in fact quite relieved to be undergoing an operation that can potentially restore an injured voice, or potentiate future professional and technical development and growth. There is almost always some microscopic scarring, with any procedure. Phonomicrosurgery is indicated when the deleterious effect on singing by lesion(s) in the vocal fold(s) is greater than the unavoidable surgically induced microscopic scarring. The enhanced technical sophistication of current phonomicrosurgical procedures has made many individuals surgical candidates in a way that was not so even a decade ago. This is very encouraging for a multitude of performers because many professionals are able to reestablish faltering careers and many students are able to maximize their conservatory experience.
