THE THEME-CAUSE/EFFECT THINKLINK

Definition and Prototypes

A second variety of the Theme ThinkLink is the Theme-Cause/Effect ThinkLink. Using theme as a departure point, experiences in literature or life are analyzed for causes or effects. The Theme-Cause/Effect ThinkLink has two variations: specific, in which a question is answered within one story, or a single context; and general, in which a question is answered by analogy from many stories, or multicontext. Figures 3.17 through 3.20 illustrate the single context Theme-Cause/Effect ThinkLink and Figures 3.21 and 3.22 illustrate the multicontext Theme-Cause/Effect ThinkLink.

Theme is sometimes the label for a central story problem. For example, “losing direction” is a theme in Pinocchio. It is also a rendering of a central problem of the story.
