Willie began by telling Ed that when the U.S. government had forcefully relocated the Choctaw people from their Native lands in the Deep South to âIndian Territoryâ in Southeast Oklahoma, they had first settled in what looked to be an ideal location. This newfound area was in a secluded valley located between two mountains that would provide protection from the storms of spring and summer as well as the worst of the winter cold. There was no shortage of resources for the recently arrived tribe. There were abundant trees from which to build their homes. Water and wild game were plentiful. It seemed like the perfect place to resettle and build their village.
However, soon after arriving in their new land, strange things began to happen. Several people of the tribe began to speak of seeing a strange creature in the forest. This creature resembled a man but was much bigger and covered in black hair. Often it was seen at the edge of the wooded trails the villagers had cut through the underbrush to make traveling between their homes and creeks easier to navigate. Most often it was noticed at dusk, watching villagers as they made their way home from their daily chores. When seen, it would vanish from sight so silently and quickly that the people began to think that it was perhaps some forest spirit that they had inadvertently disturbed.
Not long afterwards, two members of the tribe went missing. A young boy who had gone into the woods to look for wild onions never returned. Then a young woman who went to a creek near her home to wash her familyâs clothes likewise disappeared. Members of the tribe searched the woods and surrounding area but were unable to find either the boy or the young woman. The only evidence that the woman had even gone to the creek, was her laundry, found at the edge of the water by her husband as if she had simply set it down and walked away from it. Naturally, the strange creature that had been seen in the woods was suspected of taking the two.
It was soon after these disappearances that the people, ever more fearful of the giant apparition that was now frequently seen watching from the dark forest, began traveling in groups of three or more for protection. It was during this time that a man reportedly got a good look at the creature as he was sitting on his front porch one evening just before dark.
This man had just lit a kerosene lamp and sat down in his chair to sharpen his knife when he saw what he at first thought to be someone standing in the trail in front of his house. He said âHelloâ to the individual, thinking it was a neighbor coming to visit, but received no reply from the silent figure. He stood up and stepped off his porch to better see who it was that stood motionless at the edge of his property. What he saw was unlike any person he had ever seen.
