CHAPTER EIGHT

JACK

I'm sitting at the bar soaking in my whiskey thinking about Ann. It hurts my heart that David came here to be with her and I cannot. Right now I just want to throw this glass across the room; I'm so fucking frustrated.

“Hello Jack.”

I looked in the direction of the voice.

“Audrey what are you doing here?”

“I came to support my husband,” she said removing her long red gloves from her hands before sitting down next to me at the bar.

“Are you just getting in?” I asked.

“No I've been here all day; shopping. A girl cannot come to New York and not shop till she drops,” she chuckled.

“I am beat. Bartender I'll have a dirty martini shaken not stirred,” ordered Audrey.

“Coming right up ma’am,” replied the bartender.

“Jack what's the matter? Why are you sulking in your whiskey?”

“I’m ready to go back to L.A. where it’s warm; working in this cold weather is grueling.”

“I don't believe you Jack. I think you're sulking over that Ann woman.”

“Audrey don't come here with your accusations and speculations. I just want to drink a cocktail before heading up to bed.”

“Fine Jack. I'll let it go for now.”

I watched Audrey take her time sipping on her dirty martini. We both sat together in silence with nothing to say to one another. What is a couple to do that’s not in love with each other? After 15 minutes of silence I was growing annoyed sitting next to her.

“Well Jack I'm going to retire to our room.”

My mouth dropped open. “Our room?” I asked.

“Yes husband and wife cannot be separated. I took the liberty to have your belongings moved to our suite room 574.”

“Audrey that was not necessary no one is going to pay any attention to us not staying in the same room together.”

“Jack I beg to differ. You have been on all the variety shows and late night talk shows. Everyone loves the trailers of the film; this is the most anticipated film since before the war started. You are going to be a huge movie star which means we will have to keep up appearances.”

Audrey stood up, kissed me on the cheek, and went to the penthouse suite.

****

I wished Audrey would not have come here. I don't have time for her mess today. I slowly made my way to the suite not wanting to be bothered tonight. I walked into the suite towards our bedroom to see Audrey lying in bed wearing a nightie.

“Audrey give it up! Nothing is going to happen between us.”

“Jack you can't mean that," replied Audrey quickly standing to her feet in front of me placing her hands upon her hips.

“Audrey just let it go. I’m tired. I just don't want to be bothered tonight. Please let me get some rest,” I sternly stated as I removed my neck tie throwing it over on the chair.

“Fine Jack! It’s your life just remember you are destroying our marriage all over that little twit again?”

“Audrey no one can destroy what isn’t. You destroyed us! We are not a real couple I am just some sort of man fixture.
