“There is a ghost in my house,” said Imogen May.

“A real one?” said Magnolia.

“I think so,” said Imogen May, wrapping herself in one of Magnolia’s new bedroom curtains.

“How do you know?”

“I can hear it. Every night there is a shuffle in the hallway and a white flash past my door.”

“Have you tried to catch it?”

“Not yet,” sighed Imogen May. “Too spooky. I wish I had yellow daisies on my curtains. Our curtains are old and brown and horrible. No wonder there are ghosts hiding behind them.”

Magnolia nodded. She didn’t believe in ghosts. Although if she did, an old, brown curtain would be the first place she would go looking. In the morning she would ask her parents if she and Imogen May could have a second sleepover next Friday night. That way, she could see for herself. Right now, though, there were more important matters to discuss.

“I would be a dragon fruit,” said Magnolia, dangling upside-down from her bed.

“Do they breathe fire?” said Imogen May, swinging beside her.

“Yes.”

“I would be an apple,” said Imogen May.

“Why?” said Magnolia, tickling Atlas under his chin.

“Because you are constantly reinventing yourself. You are always doing something new. Apple jam, apple pie, apple sauce, apple cake. Apples can be anything.”

“Or you could be left in the bottom of a smelly schoolbag and forgotten about because everyone is sick of you.”

“Actually, can I change my answer?”

“No, you can’t.”
