What can you tell from wombat droppings?

Is the dropping brown, black or green? Can you see bits of grass, seeds or tussock in it? That will tell you what the wombat has been eating.

Is the dropping soft and squishy or squarish? That will tell you how good a season it is. If there is a lot of grass the droppings will be sloppy; if they’re really hard and dry looking, there’s a drought.

Is the dropping on a high point or hidden? Every month or so Mothball leaves droppings all around our house, about a metre apart. This is her way of saying, ‘This place is mine.’ (No, I am not going to do the same thing—if she wants to claim the house, it’s fine by me.)

Is the dropping tiny, big or enormous? A tiny dropping means a tiny wombat. If the wombat dropping is as big as a brick, there’s a Diprotodon about. Run!
