The next morning, as he was waking up, Billy thought he had been dreaming. He opened his eyes and realized this was no dream. This was something he could have never been prepared for. He let himself think about his mom and dad. Had they missed him yet? If they did, did they care?

He didn’t know what happened and why they had changed from the mother and father that just two years ago had taken care of him. Little by little, they began to drink and argue, ignoring him and his needs. He couldn’t say he missed his parents; what he did miss was what was familiar to him.

Billy was smart. He was a survivor, but didn’t understand the reason for this place or why he was here. This place was too weird, but it wasn’t a bad place, so far anyway. He stood up, yawned and stretched. The room was empty. He looked under the bed and Billy found the box where Kindel said he would. He lifted the lid and inside were two oblong shaped boxes with lids, one for his toothbrush and one for his comb. He decided to put his change in the container. It looked like it wouldn’t be needed here. He opened the door enough to peek out and Kindel was there.

“Good morning, Billy, I hope you slept well.”

Billy answered with a nod.

First stop was the bathroom. When Billy finished there, he took the box back as he was told and slid it back under the edge of the bed, then ran to meet up with Kindel.

Billy got in line with the others, filled his plate with some of everything, and sat.

Breakfast was hard boiled eggs, small roasted potatoes, large loaves of sliced bread, still warm, and sweet gooey honey to spread on it. There were also apple slices and peach slices. There was no going hungry here.

Little Cindy hurried to claim a place next to Billy.

“Good morning, Billy,” she said with a big smile.

With a shy smile Billy said good morning to her.

She didn’t seem to be a threat.

“Hi, Billy,” said the boy sitting on the other seat to the left of him.

Billy turned to face the boy who spoke. Bright blue eyes, red hair, and freckles like tiny bits of paint someone flicked from their fingers onto his face.

“I’m Ethan. You probably don’t remember me from last night. Too many faces and names to put together.”

“Yeah,” Billy said.

He wasn’t used to people being friendly and smiling. It made him feel shy. He didn’t like that feeling of drawing inside himself.

The lady with the long dark hair filled his cup with cold sweet milk and a thank you slipped from Billy’s lips. The woman beamed a bright smile at Billy. “My name is Anna and you’re very welcome, Billy,” and then she moved to Ethan to fill his cup.

After Billy had finished his breakfast, he stepped outside to see Kindel patting his belly with a satisfied grin.

“Are you ready to see Stomaker, Billy?”

“Yes.”

He was full of questions.
