“… He might be in love with you.”

“You could be the girl to tame him.”

Squeezing my eyes closed, I release a slow exhale. He’s three hours away at Hale and I don’t have plans to see him over break since he plans to spend the time off from classes working. It’s probably a good thing—maybe we need to take this break to see where we stand.

I step into the shower and let the hot water cascade down over me. After washing with my favorite vanilla body wash and shaving all the important areas, I grab a towel.

I’m brushing my damp hair when I hear something rustling outside my window.

My stomach jumps.

It couldn’t be.

I go to the window and unlatch it and there’s Graham.

“What are you doing here?” I whisper, helping him inside.

He straightens to his full height and gathers me into a hug. “Hi,” he says, voice uncharacteristically soft.

“Seriously, what the heck are you doing here?”

He shrugs, those gray eyes that promise mischief meeting mine. “I was bored. And I wanted to see you. Should I not have come?”

I shake my head. “No. I’m glad you’re here. But you could have gone to the front door like a normal human, ya know?”

He smiles. “Being normal is vastly overrated.”

“How’s your break been? Working a lot, I guess?”

Graham sits down in the center of my bed, nodding. “Yeah. But it’s been good. Campus is totally dead, though.”

“My mom is expecting me to come down in a few minutes to watch a movie. Let me go tell them to start it without me.”

“You sure it’s okay I’m here?”

“I’m positive. Just give me one minute.”

He nods and I dash off for the stairs, carefully closing the door behind me.

A minute later, when I return, he’s removed his shoes and socks and he’s lying on my bed against my pillows, staring straight up at the ceiling.

He’s unbearably handsome.

I wonder what he’s thinking. Why he’s really here.

I sit down on the bed beside him, wishing I had changed into something more presentable than my yoga pants and tank top. I’m not even wearing a bra. Meanwhile, Graham looks like sex on legs…dark, tousled hair, a dusting of stubble on his jaw, full, pouty mouth. Eyelashes that I wish I could steal.

“What’s new?” he asks.

I take a deep breath and let out a long sigh. “A lot, actually.” I grab the letter I received from the adoption agency and unfold the creased page, handing it to him.

“Wow,” he says after reading it. “Are you going do it?”

I nod. The adoption agency had located my birth mother and was offering to put us in touch. I haven’t given them the go ahead, but I plan to.

I share with him all the steps I’d taken so far and about how I’m ready to meet her, but also need to tread carefully so as not to upset my parents. He listens to me talk, patiently and without interrupting.

When I pause, I realize he’s just staring at me.

“You’re staring,” I say.

A lazy smile uncurls on his mouth, but he doesn’t look away.
