As soon as she opened her eyes, June realized that she was shivering. Staring ahead into darkness, she tried to remember what had happened, and then â as she thought back to the sensation of falling â she began to sit up. At that moment she felt a throbbing pain on the side of her head, and she reached up to touch the painful spot, only to wince as she touched the area where a bruise had already begun to blossom.
âI checked on you,â a man's voice said. âI knew you'd be fine.â
Turning, she saw that he was standing in the middle of the hidden chamber, casting the beam from a flashlight all around.
âHow did we end up in here?â she asked groggily.
âI knew there had to be a second entrance,â he explained, turning until the beam was shining almost directly into her eyes. âSorry,â he added as he swung it away again. âI know how annoying that can be. You're just lucky I had my little pack of clothes, or this situation would be far more awkward.â
âI fell,â she whispered, as she began to piece together the events that had led to her tumbling down into the hole. âDid I hit my head?â
âYou're tougher than you look,â he replied. âSorry again. That probably sounded a little patronizing.â
Slowly getting to her feet, June once again touched the painful spot on the side of her head. She felt a little unsteady, but she was determined to not show any weakness.
âThis is quite the place,â the man said, making his way around the altar in the middle of the room. âSomeone obviously went to a lot of trouble a long time ago. And then somebody else went to an equal amount of trouble to hide it all away. I'm starting to pick up the distinct scent of the First Order's involvement. Have you seen the markings on this thing?â
June watched as he ran his fingers across the surface of the altar. Stepping forward, she realized for the first time that the grooves in the stonework were symmetrical, creating little channels that ran down toward one end.
âThere's quite a lot of discoloration,â the man mused. âDo you see here? And here? It's hard not to think that this might have been caused by blood.â
âBlood?â
She looked at him, shocked by the notion.
âAre you suggesting -â
âI'm suggesting that we might not entirely want to know what used to go on in this place,â he replied, before looking up at the ceiling. âAnd do you see those?â
Following his gaze, June failed at first to spot anything significant, but after a few seconds she realized that several markings had been carved into the space directly above the altar. She squinted a little, but she still couldn't quite work out what the markings were supposed to mean.
âIt's no language that I've ever seen before,â the man said. âSomething ancient, perhaps. Or gibberish. I wouldn't discount gibberish just yet.â
âYou changed,â she replied, turning to him. âYou were...â
Her voice trailed off.
