Dear Nancy,
It’s great to hear from you. I’m so glad you’re all having fun in Costa Rica. Have you stumbled across a new mystery yet? I tried to make a reservation at Corcovado Ecologica, but could not. I got a message back almost immediately, and it said that the lodge was completely booked through the end of the year. I hope this helps.
River Heights isn’t the same without you. I miss you and I can’t wait to see you next week. Have fun and be careful!
Yours truly,
Ned
I grinned and fired off a quick note back, thanking Ned for his help, and writing that I missed him, too.
Then I went to find Jason, because we had some business to discuss.
While it was true that Jason had been very rude ever since we’d gotten to the lodge, that didn’t make him guilty of anything other than being rude. And I hadn’t found anything suspicious in his office. I couldn’t imagine that he knew his computer system was faulty. Maybe his bad attitude was all about stress over the fact that the resort was so empty.
In my heart of hearts, I hoped he’d be happy that I’d discovered the computer glitch. Maybe he’d be able to get it fixed right away. The resort would be busy again, and he’d be able to afford to rehire his staff. They would clean the place up, and all would return to normal. Even though this didn’t explain Esteban’s disappearance, the petty theft, or even the missing monkeys, it was something—and I was pretty excited to give him the good news.
Before I found Jason, though, I ran into George, who was on her way back to the dining hall from the bathroom. I quickly filled her in on my discovery.
George didn’t seem surprised at all. “Something similar happened once on my mom’s catering business Web site,” she explained. “We meant to send an automatic message saying we’d be away for the week—this was last summer when my family rented the cabin up at Lake Firefly—but instead the message said ‘We’re closed’—as if it was indefinite. We lost a ton of business.”
“That stinks,” I said.
“It did.” George nodded. “Anyway, my point is that I know how to fix the problem. If Jason wants, I’d be happy to reprogram the site.”
I smiled at her, saying, “That sounds terrific. I can’t wait to give Jason the good news!”
We found him a few minutes later, reading a magazine in the lounge.
“Jason?” I asked.
He looked up and frowned at me. “You locked my office behind you, right, Nancy?”
I nodded. “Yes, of course. I wanted to tell you something, though. I had reason to believe that the Corcovado Ecologica Web site was faulty, so I had a friend from River Heights do a little experiment.”
Jason looked at me suspiciously. “What kind of experiment?” he asked slowly.
“Dan told me that his brother tried to make a reservation at the lodge last month, but he got a message back saying it was booked. It seemed strange, since you told me that this place has been empty for months.
