Why and Goals

Coming up with your goals list is step one in goal setting. Making sure your goals are aligned with your mission and values, as Jim Carrey did, is step two. Goals are powerful. They are the steering wheel that guides your drive through the journey of life. As you think about your goals, keep in mind that one of the most important principles in good goal setting is understanding why you want to achieve that goal in the first place. Always remember to look at your goals and ask yourself, Why do I want this? The answer may change your whole life.

You may want something but find out you want it not for the reasons you think—like that Jaguar I was so desperate to bring into my life. If I had sat back and looked at why I wanted it, I might have realized that it wasn’t really the Jaguar I wanted. What I wanted was approval and respect. I wanted to feel important. It really had nothing to do with the car.

Say you have been lusting after the latest designer handbag—something to make you feel cool, one of the in crowd. Do you really need a designer bag to feel that? When I work with people, I find that material goals are where a lot of breakdown occurs. I simply ask why they really want something and then listen to the response. More often than not, when they really examine their reasons, there goes another thing off their list! So as you are making your list of goals, be sure to include the reasons why you want to accomplish each one.

Many people don’t know how to set goals. If they set goals at all, they often set the wrong ones—goals that are not aligned with their missions and values. This is where the Sacred Six process can help. Instead of rushing toward goals you later realize are all wrong, you can step back and gain some clarity. I see so many people pushing to move forward. Often, stepping back and thinking things through—understanding why—will tell you if you’re setting the right goal.

I wanted to help people, so I set a goal to write Get Out of Neutral, my first book. I never stepped back and thought about why I was writing it. If I had, I would have seen what I really wanted was the residual income I could earn from royalties. Similarly, I never looked closely at why I wanted to be a motivational speaker. If I had, I would have seen I wanted the authority and celebrity a well-known speaker acquires. As my book failed, and I realized that the speaker’s life was not for me, I had no choice but to stop what I was doing, step back, and take a closer look at my goals.

This was a turning point. I lost my house, and I lost some status in the community. Ultimately it was the best thing that could have happened: It allowed me to find the real goals that would align my life with my values and mission.
